Community Health Programme:

It has become obvious from our mission, vision and objectives that ICMH is not only intend to provide health care services within the four walls of hospital but also to extend its comprehensive services in the community. Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics is the focal department for these activities. The following are the few community activities undertaken by the ICMH.

A. Community Activities at Jalkuri:

In continuation of the attempt to develop a demographic surveillance system at five villages around Jalkuri branch of ICMH, a census was carried out in 1998.

  • this study explored the demographic transition in a peri-urban area of the country.
  • through the process of this study there was a strengthening of community linkage in health care service of ICMH
  • the survey also made people aware of the activities of ICMH, Jalkuri branch
  • Survey data are now available as background information in the management of patients when attending the hospital.
  • a study has been completed to determine the causes of under five mortality based on the findings of the census 98.

Census and Health Survey in five villages around Jalkuri branch of ICMH

It has been found that 30% household increased in the study area by 4 years. It has also been found that population in this area increased by 25.6% from 1994 to 1998. This figure indicates that there is a rapid migration of rural people to the urban area.

Model Demographic Surveillance System:

A community based approach Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics has been conducting a Demographic Surveillance System since December 2000 at Pilkuni. This is a community based activity where the data are collected by local health volunteers to ensure community participation.

1. Goal: The goal of the DSS is to test the cost effective and feasible method of demographic surveillance system.

2. Objectives:To collect the data of vital events of life in a community by volunteers

  • To measure the growth of population in the community
  • To identify the pattern, levels and trend of fertility in the community
  • To identify the pattern, levels and trend of mortality in the community
  • To identify the pattern and trend of nuptiality in the community
  • To assess the levels and trend of movement of population

3. Date of commencement: 12 December 2000
4. Training of volunteer: Trained 18 health volunteers between 25-26 April 2001
5. Data collection: 01 may 2001
6. Number of household: 719
7. Population: 3371
