of the Department
Objectives
of the department:
The objectives of the department are to develop health
man power in Epidemiology and community health, enhance
the research capabilities of health personnel, conduct
problem oriented Essential Health and Nutrition Research,
provide comprehensive health care for children and
mothers in the community.
Facilities:
-Man Power
-There are three academics - Professor (1) , Associate
Professor (1) and Assistant Professor (1) in the department.
Moreover, the following personnel are actively involved
in various activities of the department:

Space:
A space of about 3000 square feet is available for
the department, which accommodates two class rooms,
two workplaces for the students, a space for computer
training Laboratory, and various workplaces for the
staff of the department.
Activities:
Research Activities
The department is responsible for conducting research
in the field of health and nutrition and also provides
support to other faculties to carry out research work
in the same fields. A list of research titles is provided
in Annex 1.

Organising
Conferences:
The department organises
various national and international conferences. Recently
in February 2000, the department organised the 9th
International Conference on Safe Communities.
1. Preamble:
Institute of
Child and Mother Health (ICMH) is a unique institution
to guide and lead the country in child and mother
health and a model of combined community and hospital
based services on preventive, promotive and curative
care. The idea of the Institute was first conceived
in 1981. In 1989, MOHFW acquired 12.62 acres of land
at Matuail. ECNEC approved the project in 1991 and
the project formally began in July 1992 with the appointment
of Professor M Q-K Talukder as full time Project Director.
After completion of the construction the institute
was formally inaugurated in March 1999
Location:
The Main branch of ICMH is located at Matuail, which
is 7 km. to the South East from the zero point of
Dhaka City by the side of Dhaka-Chittagong high way.
The Jalkuri branch of ICMH is on an area of 2 acres
of land situated halfway by the side of Dhaka-Narayanganj
link road and 5 kilometers away from Matuail.
Goal:
The ultimate goal of this Institute is to bring about
an improvement in the health and nutritional status
of children and mothers of the country.

2. Departmental Objectives:
The Department of Epidemiology
and Biostatistics is a vital department for the Institute.
This is because research is one of the main objectives
of the ICMH.
The following are the objectives
of the department:
- To develop health man power
in Epidemiology and Community Health
- To enhance the research capabilities
of health personnel
- To conduct problem oriented
Essential Health and Nutrition Research
- To provide comprehensive
health care for children and mothers in the community
- To involve in the health
promotion activities in clinical services of the
Institute
- To develop a model health
care service at community level (ESP)
- To develop and maintain an
effective computerised Patient Record Management
System (PRMS) in the institute.
Goal:
The ultimate goal of the above objectives is to bring
about an improvement in health and nutrition status
of the children and mothers in the country.
