Highlights of the Department

Objectives of the department:

3. Facilities in the Department of Epidemiology and Bio-Statistics:

Physical Facilities of the Department:

  • a class room to accommodate 40 trainees,
  • a demonstration room,
  • a study area for trainees having 20 sitting arrangements,
  • a computer laboratory,
  • a departmental library,
  • a surveillance room to organise, monitor and display the results of the Demographic Surveillance System (DSS), and
  • also work areas for the different level staff of the department

Field Practice Area:

  • Sonargaon community, a population laboratory
  • Six villages around ICMH, Jalkuri in Narayangang.

Demographic Surveillance System at Pilkuni:

A village named Pilkuni of Narayanganj sadar upazila has been selected for Demographic Surveillance. This surveillance is conducted by the volunteers of the village.

4 Activities of the Department:

Research:

The department is involved in conducting research in various areas including reproductive health, child health, nutrition, accidents and injuries, disability, HIV/AIDS, health service, planning and policy, health economics, hypertension and infectious disease. Moreover, the department is also responsible to support other departments of the institute to conduct various research.

Training: On going

  • Essential of Health and Nutrition Research for Health Professionals
  • MCH care for BSc Public Health Nursing and Midwifery students
  • Demonstration of Community Health Services for the Undergraduate Medical
    Students at Field Site
  • Involved in Training of the post graduate doctors on Child Health
  • Involved in Training of midlevel managers of different organisations including BINP and BBF
  • Involved in ESP orientation TOT for thana Trainers Team (TTT) for Clinical Service Providers at Thana Level and below
  • Involved in Training on Nutrition for the Specialists
  • Involved in TOT course for training of FWVs on Midwifery.

Proposed Courses: Short Courses

  • Short course on the Introductory Epidemiology and Biostatistics for medical professionals
  • Short term course on Advanced Epidemiology
  • Short term course on Injury Control and Safety Promotion
  • Training on Medical Information Technology

Long Courses ( One academic year):

  • MPH (Community Child Health)
  • MPH (Reproductive Health)

Brief Report of the first training on Essential of Health and Nutrition Research for Health Professionals.A two-week (five days a week) training course on Essential of Health and Nutrition Research for Health Professionals was organised by the Dept. of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, ICMH between January 23, 2000 and February 5, 2000. There were eleven participants all together. Graduate doctors, educationist and economist comprised the group. ICMH academic staff and some guest lecturers were the resource persons of the sessions. Both theoretical and practical sessions were provided. A great enthusiasm was observed among the participants. The closing session was chaired by the Director of the institute. Getting a very positive feed back from the participants regarding the unique quality of the course, he encouraged the academics of Epidemiology and Biostatistics to organised the course at least thrice in a year.
